Budapest, Hungary (March 24, 2024) - A Danube River cruise ship carrying passengers crashed into the Széchenyi Chain Bridge in Budapest on Friday morning, causing significant damage to the vessel and the bridge. The incident occurred around 10:53 AM local time (PDT) when the ship, the MS Viking Sigyn, suddenly lost the ability to maneuver and collided with the bridge.

According to Hungarian authorities, there were no immediate reports of injuries or fatalities among the passengers or crew. However, the crash caused significant damage to both the ship and the bridge, disrupting traffic and navigation along the Danube River.

Captain Detained

The captain of the Heidelberg, a 64-year-old Swiss national, has been detained by Hungarian authorities for questioning. He is suspected of negligence or other wrongdoing that may have contributed to the crash.
