Mississippi State Fires Zach Arnett as Head Football Coach
Arnett's Tenure Ends After Just One Year
Former Interim Coach's Removal Marks End of One-and-Done Era
Mississippi State has parted ways with head football coach Zach Arnett, less than one year after he was appointed to the permanent role. The decision follows a disappointing 5-6 season and a crushing 51-10 loss to Texas A&M that proved to be the final straw.
Arnett was initially named interim head coach at Mississippi State in December 2022, following the hospitalization and subsequent death of former coach Mike Leach. After Leach's passing, the interim tag was removed from Arnett's title.
The move to fire Arnett marks a sudden end to his short tenure as head coach. Just last year, Mississippi State expressed confidence in Arnett, removing the interim tag and handing him the reins of the program. However, the team's performance under his leadership ultimately fell short of expectations.
Mississippi State's Director of Athletics, Zac Selmon, released a statement announcing the decision to fire Arnett. He thanked Arnett for his service and wished him well in his future endeavors. The university has not yet announced a replacement for Arnett.
